Firearm Turn-in

Procedure for turning in a Firearm to Charlestown Police.

Prior to turning in a firearm to the Charlestown Police, the individual shall contact dispatch at 401-364-1212 and advise them of the reason for their visit. Never walk directly into the Charlestown Police Department, or any other police department carrying a firearm.

Make sure you have a copy of the protective order in your possession when turning in a firearm. See RI State Law 8-8.1

Each firearm must be rendered safe, preferably with a trigger lock or cable lock, and placed seperately in a clear plastic bag, unless packaged in a gun case and delivered in a non-see through container such as a pocket book, gym bag, back pack or suit case.

The firearm must be transported in the trunk of a car separate from any ammunition.

If turning in magazines in addition to a firearm, the magazine must be emptied and placed in a clear plastic bag and delivered in a non-see through container.

If turning in ammunition, the ammunition must also be placed in a clear pastic bag and deleivered in a separate non-see through container such as a pocket book, gym bag, backpack or suit case.

Rifles and shotguns must be rendered safe, preferably with a trigger lock or cable lock and have the safety engaged, all ammo removed and the bolt locked to the rear. The rifle(s) and shotgun(s) can be contained in a gun case if available..
